My friend migrated to Australia and I had asked him about the way of life between his country and Singapore
He said that that Singapore and Australia were very different
Food:
There are higher prices for food so to live there is very expensive and there are bigger portion sizes and there are much more western food and cafes compared to Singapore where there are much more authentic food and very little variety compared to Singapore and to get food they would have to go out of their way to buy food in Australia as its is much less convenient then in Singapore as they would have to get food from a certain place while in Singapore we have hawker centers which are very accessible which are mostly a five minutes walk away
Houses:
Their houses are more of landed properties then in Singapore where we have high-rise buildings
But in when nearer in the cities most of the buildings are apartments so that they can accommodate to the high urban population in the cities. They mostly have garages and most have gardens, this shows that they have a higher standard of living and their houses are more expensive than in Singapore
Lifestyle changes:
He had migrated from Singapore to Australia and had to get used to some changes as it is very cold in Australia he had to buy more layers of clothing to get used to the temperatures there. And there are very drastic changes in temperatures during this time of the year it can reach to 10 degrees celsius and be even lower during the winter and during the summer can be even hotter than the temperatures in Singapore his school hours are lesser than ours in Singapore only 6 hours if not 5 and a half hours. Their school starts at 9 and ends at 3pm or 3.30pm
Unlike in Singapore where school is later and not very consistent having to go home at 1.30pm if not until 3pm.
Culture:
There is less of a diversity in Australia than in Singapore as there are more Caucasians then any other race while in Singapore we can see many different types of races in Singapore Indians, malays, chinese, eurasians. And the people there are more approachable and more friendly than the people in Singapore. There are more festivals in australia to celebrate art such as adelaide festival to celebrate art in Australia and the Sydney winter festival where one can get good food, listen to music and see the fireworks. However in Singapore we also have many festivals for each and every race like Deepavali and hari raya and Chinese new year.
Changes:
Since my friend has migrated to Singapore there are behaviours that he had carried over like him still saying Singlish. But there are behaviours that he had adopted from australia when i was asking about how he was in Australia i saw him saying words like ‘spaz’ which means autistic and things like CBD (central business district ) and he also told me that he now has a somewhat Australian accent.
My opinion:
I feel like i would still want to stay in Singapore although visiting country would be great
I would still want to stay in Singapore as do not want to spend more money to be living there and i also enjoy the diversity that Singapore in terms of food in people i get more exposure to everyone’s tradition and this helps me to become a patient and understanding person. I still would prefer Singapore as everything is only a stone’s throw away and everything is much more convenient than in Australia.
Conclusion
Although my friend prefers Australia over Singapore because of the cold weather and the people there are more approachable than in Singapore i feel like Singapore and Australia is very different than singapore in terms of the standard of living and the way of life as the food are more expensive and bigger than in Singapore and the houses are more expensive included with gardens and are landed properties and the drastic weather conditions and very different festivals than what we celebrate in Singapore. But i would still prefer singapore over Australia.
