I volunteered at the CDAC back-to-school program in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020.
In 2016 when I was in Primary 5 I was tasked to give out queue numbers for the people visiting the eye clinic for the whole day from 8am to 5pm. I went back home earlier as I came down with a cold.
In 2017, when I was in Secondary 2 in the back to school program I was tasked to be at the second-hand book collection station so as to help people find books that they need I volunteered from 8am to 6pm
In 2019, I was holding a sign to point the people towards the queue of the bag collection since the queue for the collection was very long. I also volunteered from 8am to 6pm
In 2020, there was a substantially lesser amount of people because of covid-19, and our job as volunteers was much simpler when we had to usher people towards the hall of the second level so as to guide them to the bag collection. I volunteered from 8am to 6pm
I volunteered for 4 years for over 8 hours.
I learned how to deal with people as I was at the front of the queue holding the sign and people tried to ask me to get in the queue faster. One incident was this parent had an autistic child in her car with her family and she said the child was very irritable so she wanted to go first, due to my lack in experience I started to doubt her claim but I told myself there is no reason to lie to that extent and I referred her to the people in charge so as to assist her.
Volunteering in covid-19 also let me see firsthand the impact the virus had on Singapore since I had not been out much compared to other years where everywhere was crowded in 2020 there were so few people coming in. We did not even need a lot of volunteers.
