Mentorship

I had a mentor in Scouts when I was in Secondary 2, however, when the mentor became Secondary 4 he said that he was going to focus studies and he stopped coming to Scouts every Friday. This left me very aimless and confused since now when I had questions about Scouting and School life in Upper Secondary I felt like I could not approach anyone. Because of that, I realized that I should be better to the mentee that I would take under my wing.

I met Matthew Miranda when he was in Secondary 1, he was very new to scouting and when he started out scouting he did not talk a lot. I decided to take him under my wing since he was very aimless and not very motivated in scouting, I hope that I could start a spark within in for scouting. Throughout the years he has become more talkative and more expressive of himself. He has grown a lot from his Secondary school days and I hope that he will continue growing into a better version of himself with, or without my guidance

This a reflection from my mentee Matthew Miranda:
I met Lian Ying in sec 1 on the very first training and my first impression was that he was more hardworking and competitive than the others in his batch. To me, he seemed to put in the most effort out of everyone in the whole CCA when we do our patrol games or mini-competitions against the other patrols. As a junior, I was able to understand easily the rules we had to follow in scouts such as how we have to stand in a horseshoe or in patrol files from Lian Ying. He helped me by also always encouraging our patrol when we have a task to fulfill. I learned to have more self-control as well as perseverance. I learned from him how to have more self-control because he showed me how standing in sedeia / senang diri without fidgeting is not as bad as it sounds and he told me tips on how to endure you don’t fidget such as wiggling your toes if you have to. I learned to persevere from him because he was the senior to always try hard when we had patrol tasks to do and he was always on the ball to ensure we finished it on time and faster than others.

Becoming a mentor has benefited me because it helped me to become a better person in general such as having a positive attitude and always trying in anything. During my time as a mentor when my mentee asked me questions, I realized that I sometimes didn't have the answer to his questions even though I had been in Scouts for a long time. This made me realized that I should brush up on my scouting knowledge so as to help my juniors and mentees better. From this, I learned that I should not do a lackluster job in my work and during scouts and I should try my best in everything that I do.
