My Patrol Leader Journey

9 months ago during the Singapore nationwide circuit breaker where the whole nation was cooped up in their homes, schools were closed and CCAs were all moved online. It was during this period that the seniors in Secondary Three were called into a Zoom call to announce the leadership appointments. When I was announced as the patrol leader of Eagle a shiver went up to my spine, as I was not expecting this huge of a responsibility. However, I was ready to take up this challenge.

The pandemic to me was unprecedented. We had to teach the juniors in a very unique and unexpected way. Throughout history, this was never done before and we had to adapt to these very unique conditions and teach the juniors through online materials and Zoom.

A memorable experience during this period was during the online meetings when the Patrol Leader Council (PLC) had to meet with the leaders of the troop. We had to meet with the leaders early in the morning, since there was no set schedule our sleep schedules were all over the place including the one of Chairman Ignatius Lee. Because we were so dependant on him for doing the tasks for us, the whole PLC was thrown into chaos. Nobody could take charge and the vice-chairman was not used to taking charge he kept trying to wake up the chairman instead of taking charge. The vice-chairman only took charge at the last minute when he made a Zoom meeting to meet with the Leaders and the chairman woke up. I kept reminding the vice-chairman of what he was supposed to do and helped him with the setting up of all the websites and materials.

Through that very anxiety-wrecking situation, we reflected and decided that we should be more responsible for our roles and play a bigger part in the PLC. So we tried to take more initiative in the planning of our online meetings and lessen the burden that we put on our chairman. We became more responsible as patrol leaders and took more responsibility as the pandemic situation died down and we finally went back to normal in the planning of our activities.

We became busier with CCA and studying almost struggling to keep a balance between them since we were in charge of overseeing everything in the CCA. To keep a balance between Scouts and School I had to really try and manage my time wisely so as to give my best in everything in my studies and in scouts. Every week I had a to-do list so as to keep track of what I had to do, through this I managed my time better and kept up with the pace of school and scouts.  It was a tough time but we managed to persevere and made it through to where we are now.

I would like to use this blog post to thank all my fellow patrol leaders. Ignatius Lee, Sherwin Abiara, Gabriel Quek, Asvind, and my senior ventures from that guided me when I was in Secondary 1 & 2, Jerald and Justin. Thank you for helping me through my scouting journey I simply could not have made it here without you guys!

THANK YOU :)
